Going long is the oldest idea in markets: you expect the price to rise, so you hold the asset. In crypto it can mean two different things, owning the coin or holding a contract on its price, and Sparkling lets you do either from the same chat.
| Spot long | Perp long | |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | The coin itself | A contract on its price |
| Leverage | None | Optional |
| Can be liquidated | No | Yes, at the liquidation price |
| Ongoing cost | None after purchase | Funding while open |
| Example request | “Buy 100 dollars of SOL” | “Long SOL with 100 USDC margin” |
A long perp is one of the instruments described on our page about perpetual futures.
A third, short-term option is an Up binary option on Lighter for BTC or ETH: you pay for the shares in full, and each winning share pays 1 USDC when the 15-minute window closes higher, with no liquidation along the way.
On a spot long, your result is simply the price change times the coins you hold. On a perp long, it is the price change times the position size, so with leverage the same move has a bigger effect on your margin, and funding is added or subtracted while the position is open.
A minute or two once your balance is funded.
Spot if you want to own the coin; perp if you want leverage or plan to exit soon.
30 sec
For example “buy 50 dollars of BTC” or “long BTC with 50 USDC, small size”.
30 sec
For a perp, read the entry, size and liquidation price.
Tip: Lower leverage keeps liquidation further away.
30 sec
Ask “show my PnL” any time, or “close my BTC long”.
30 sec
The opposite trade, profiting from a fall, is explained on our page about how to short crypto.
Spot longs are open wherever Sparkling works; perp longs follow regional derivatives rules.

A spot long can lose most of its value in a crash; a leveraged long can be liquidated much sooner. Only risk money you can afford to lose. In Sparkling app every position is opened only by your signature; this is not investment advice.
Holding a coin or a contract so that you profit if the price rises.
Yes, a spot purchase is a long without leverage.
No. Only leveraged positions have a liquidation price.
Ask the agent “show my PnL” or open the positions screen.
When the perp trades above spot, longs pay funding to shorts, and vice versa.
