Short crypto with Sparkling using perpetual futures

Crypto falls as hard as it rises, and a short position lets you act on that view or protect coins you already hold. Doing it usually means borrowing on an exchange; in Sparkling a short is a perp order the agent prepares and you sign.

What is a short in crypto?

In stocks, shorting means borrowing shares, selling them and buying them back later. In crypto the simplest route is a perpetual future: you open a short contract, and the contract gains value as the coin’s price falls. You never borrow or deliver the coin itself.

Step by step

  1. Top up margin

Short positions are collateralised with USDC.

    30 sec

  2. Describe the short

For example “short ETH with 100 USDC margin”.

    30 sec

  3. Read the liquidation price

For a short it sits above your entry; a rally to that level closes the position.

    Tip: Lower size, lower risk.

    30 sec

  4. Confirm and watch

Close any time with “close my ETH short”.

How losses work on a short

A long can lose at most what it cost, because a price cannot fall below zero. A short has no such ceiling in theory, since a price can keep rising; in practice the loss on a perp short is capped by liquidation, which closes the position when the margin runs out.

Sharp rallies that force many shorts to close at once are called short squeezes, and they are common in crypto. How leverage changes the distance to liquidation is explained on our page about leverage trading.

Betting on a fall without a short position

For a quick view that BTC or ETH will drop over the next 15 minutes, a Down binary option on Lighter is an alternative to a short perp. You pay for the shares upfront, there is no margin call or liquidation, and a winning share pays 1 USDC at the end of the window.

Shorting to hedge coins you hold

If you hold 1 ETH and don’t want to sell it, a short of similar size offsets price moves for as long as it is open: a fall in your ETH is balanced by a gain on the short. Funding and fees still apply, so a hedge has a running cost. The mirror image of this trade, betting on a rise, is what people mean when they go long.

Shorts can be liquidated by fast rallies, funding can turn against you when many traders are short, and timing a fall is hard. Sparkling AI agent prepares the order and shows the risk numbers; leveraged trading carries risk, and this is not investment advice.
